Setting Clear Standards in Your Business

It is important that you set clear standards in your business and communicate them to everyone involved.

As a business owner, you would already have some expectations in your head of how you want things to be.

But the question is – have you ever taken the time to write them down and share them with your team? It is one thing to have that expectation, it is another thing for people to know your expectations.

When you get frustrated because someone does not meet your expectation, that is usually because they have breached a standard that you have in your head. The problem is, they might not be even aware of it.

So here are three steps to setting clear standards in your business:

1) Write Your Standards Down

One of the first steps in setting clear standards is documenting your expectations. Define the behaviour you expect from your team, including customer service standards, productivity levels, and any other important factors.

While you may have these standards in your mind, putting them in writing ensures everyone is on the same page. It avoids confusion and empowers your team to align their actions with the established standards. Additionally, documenting the desired culture of your business creates a shared understanding of how team members should treat each other.

2) Call It Tight

Once you have written down your standards, it’s crucial to enforce them consistently. Don’t let any unacceptable behaviour slide by unnoticed. For example, if you’ve got an agreement to be on time, and someone’s not on time, then you call it.

By holding everyone accountable, a well-aligned team will start to call each other out and encourage themselves to meet the established standards. But it starts with you as the business owner or key manager to call it tight in your business.

3) Raise the Bar

Once you’ve set the standards, you’ve made them clear, you’re calling it tight, then it’s time to raise the bar. This helps your business to foster growth and continuously improve. Challenge your team to perform at higher levels and aim for greater achievements.

As your team embraces higher expectations, both internally and externally, you’ll see remarkable growth in your business. By setting new performance benchmarks, you motivate your team to excel and drive success.

When everyone knows what to do and how to do it, there is less confusion and more cooperation. This creates a positive work environment where people can work together effectively.

By setting clear standards and holding your team accountable to them, you will see positive results and your business will be more successful.
